December 2006 Archives
2006 was both a grand year and one hollow bitch of a time. The year started out well -- R and I moved in together -- and ended with family and job troubles. There's no immediate crisis right now, but we've definitely got a few resolutions down for 2007. ;) I can't say what those resolutions are -- don't want to jinx, you know -- but if we can make them happen, major positive changes are ahead. : crosses fingers! :
We're home after some revelry, and some friends are stopping over to see the New Year in -- so I'm out of here. Happy New Year, my Cakes! I know this was a rough one for most of us, so let's have a better time this year. Off we go, and see you on the other side!
: smooches! :
We heard a rather eclectic mix of music at Southpaw the other night, while waiting for They Might Be Giants to come on. One song I can't get the frig out of my head: "King of the Road." My grandfather used to drive around listening to country music all the time in the 70s, when this song was popular -- he'd zoom around in a big white car, so I always associated the chorus with him, if not the verses. :)
I've been humming it ever since Saturday night...
I read my horoscopes from a gentleman in England. Since they're about seven hours ahead of us, I get tomorrow's news today!
Here's mine for tomorrow: "When we recycle, we are giving new life to used goods. Somewhere, you are regenerating an idea, interest or project that occupied your time about 12 years ago. Einstein tells us that energy can never be destroyed, it can only change its form. Pay attention to what is recurring in your life now. It may have the same essence, but you have it within your power to change its appearance completely. Don't dismiss the benefit that it could still bring to you today."
Okay, so what was I doing at 26 besides singing in a band? Anybody? Anybody?!
Saw They Might Be Giants in Brooklyn last night -- there's a great writeup here, so I won't try and top it. :) Setlist is here. Show rocked. I've gotta tell you, I utterly and totally geek out when bouncing around to songs about the sun and James K. Polk. And twisting! NËRDCORE RULEZ!
I felt bad, though, this woman in front of me had an extra-lengthy bag, and I kept bumping into it. :( On the other hand, don't bring such a big bag to such a tiny venue...
Not much else going on. R and I had our first holiday party last weekend...first in this space and first together. We fit about 30 people in our studio, which was a minor miracle. I think the party was successful, which was a major miracle. :) We then went from being totally focused on the party to being totally focused on holiday shopping...which has now resulted in us being totally insane, as we're not finished yet. By a long shot. Hoo-eeeee.
I should have done "Holidailies" this year, but I knew that wasn't going to happen. Everyone would have been bored anyway...first two weeks in December were devoted to apartment cleanup/party prepping, and the last two weeks(ish) to shopping. How interesting is that?! Kudos to those making it through. :)
No matter who I'm listening to, I do this all the time!
Stereogum's got the Top Five Drunken Sing-along Songs, very very appropriate for this time of year. I was walking around singing "Paradise City" to R Friday night (and I wasn't even drinking yet) and then last night, at Zum Schneider, a group kept singing John Denver's "Country Road." Over. And over. Again. That and "Hey Baby (I wanna know if you'll be my girl." We counted up to three renditions before they disappointed us and left; we were sure we'd get to seven or even ten. :D
I'll be sure to get these on the "party song" list for this weekend. I'm also with the "Build me up, buttercup" guy -- that was the Theatre group singalong for about four years running in college.
