February 2008 Archives
Was bouncing around humming a little while ago...but couldn't figure out what the hell I was singing. And then I realized: "Hey there, Mr. Dealer," from the Morton Downey Jr. album.
The album was in rotation at my college radio station; I used to play this cut on my show 'cause "slime-sucking, drug-pushing, son of a bitch" was a great thing to chant while hungover on a Sunday morning. Honestly, this song's very "Smokey and the Bandit" in a sick, twisted way.
Brief list:
- Stuff's moving on with the wedding. Nine weeks to go! Taking my gown to a tailor on Saturday morning for alterations. Have now started thinking of things in terms of "before/after the wedding" -- so "last haircut before the wedding," etc. Wedding wedding wedding wedding wedding. It has saturated my frickin' brain. Things like "what size of Chinese lantern would look good in multiples in a barn?" have suddenly become CRUCIAL.
- Had the flu last week. It sucked.
- Saw "Be Kind, Rewind" last night. Unexpectedly good! Also, over dinner with friends, learned two new phrases for my arsenal of filth: "It's fisting, not stubbing!" "Nerdar!" XD
- This is so true.
Walked across town to Seventh Avenue tonight -- it was cold, but my green scarf was soft and toasty and I really needed to move around. Went down into the subway and pulled out my keys. It was only when I attempted to swipe them through the turnstile that I realized I had missed a crucial step, and wasn't home yet.
Way. To. Go. :D
...the mice will decorate. :D
I was off from work yesterday, and R had gone skiing, so I had three whole days in the apartment to myself. I deliberately didn't make plans because I'd needed some time where there wasn't anywhere I needed to be, or anyone I needed to see. With the exception of some cable service guys, who came on Saturday morning, it was just me me me me me. BLISS!
I took the time and opportunity to blow off stuff for the wedding (hey, if R could, I could too) and instead hung pictures, hung a mobile that we'd gotten for Christmas, and even finally finished an Ikea file cabinet that we'd had in the apartment for a year now. Power drills were involved. Important tip: don't ever drill Ikea furniture from the back part of the piece -- I had no idea, and bits of the front finish flaked off. Happily, the file drawer handles cover it up, (and it was only for the bottom drawer), but I was not pleased! Grrrr!
I also wanted to repot my poor spider plants, but alas, I couldn't find any nice, large, colorful pots. Looks like 'net shopping for me. :)

I...I...um...OMG. So The Police are touring this summer, yet again, and they're playing Jones Beach -- only one of my favorite places to see a band -- with Elvis Costello opening.
I'm positively foaming at the mouth. :) The Cure? Touring in June. R.E.M? June. (At Jones Beach!) Police? August.
Last summer I was all verklempt because all of R's bands were touring, and mine weren't! But this year? Summer of Roe. Booooooo yah. :D
* Entry title from "Shadows in the Rain," currently vying with "Bring on the Night" as my favorite Police song, evah.
Kids and kittens, there is just way too much going on!
Wedding stuff is in full gear. There's only ten weeks to go! Invitations have been ordered, bridesmaid's dresses have arrived, I've applied for my passport (expedited, thank you very much), and I need to go to the tailor in the next week or two to alter my wedding gown. We have a photographer, DJ, florist...we're working on wedding favors as we speak. I need to get some scarves or shawls for my bridesmaids (in case it's cold), jewelry for me, oh, and that little matter of an engagement ring and wedding bands.
It's all going to be groovy, I'm just... : makes gesture of head spinning around and around : Woosh.
The after-wedding things are cropping up. Little things that make me realize just how close the wedding really is. The next Kushiel book? Comes out in June. I had been walking around thinking, "Oh, waaaa, June, that's so far away..." Except it's NOT. : head spins again :
See?!
Bored!
I need to start thinking about photography classes again...I can't remember when summer semester starts, but I haven't done squat all winter and I'm BORED. So bored! And STALE! Hopefully I can get into a location photography class that starts in June, get more stuff down, or even just do a workshop. My camera's wailing piteously, it's lonely, I need to soothe it. :)The metrocake design isn't done by a long shot, but at least I've got a more interesting header up. (If you're reading this through a feed, come visit!) I need to adjust the header some, but the general gist is up here -- now to do some fun things with the rest of the site. Again, BORED. And yet, I can't get my act together and get my portfolio online... I'm very, very, very, very blocked when it comes to that. A friend of mine said, "Just shit it out, already," and I've been trying, but there's a lot of fear associated with it. Most designers have done agency work, so they have many clients -- and thus many different looks -- in their portfolio. I've been at my current job for twelve years, I don't have that. I've done many different things for my job -- annual reports, magazines, brochures, Web sites, won an award for e-mail blast design -- even set up an office in Second Life. But I don't have the breadth of clients, I've just gone deep with the one.
And then there's also what I want my portfolio to look like -- I can't settle, I come up with five different ideas a week and can never like one enough to get it down. The structure's in my head, but not the look and feel. One minute, it's lots of colors and pop. Another minute, it's sepia tones, letterpress, and Mrs. Eaves. I can't settle on just one.
Heaven help us if I need to paint a room an actual color...
If metrocake's looking weird to you right now, you're seeing a design in progress. Check back later. :)
