metrocake

A shining, sparkly ball of angst, now based in Manhattan!

how do I fix?

Quite a few things floating around my brain today. It’s been pointed out to me that this blog design isn’t exactly “Cakelike,” and it’s true. So, of course, I want to fix it. I have an idea that involves coffee, cake, and a rubber ducky…we’ll see how that one pans out. :)

Most of the Wordpress themes, I’m finding, look a lot alike. Three columns, big header, sometimes a photo is involved. Some of them are beautiful — I’ve seen some that are AMAZING — but most leave me a little underwhelmed. And it’s dumb of me to complain about that, I admit, as I’m looking at the free themes because I don’t have the time to learn how to make my own. It’s like complaining about how bad free food tastes when you couldn’t be bothered to learn how to cook.

But, yes, changes a-coming, give me time. :)

The bigger fix…

Where I need more help is in getting my portfolio together. My biggest issue is that I want to do Web work — that’s how I started at my current job, and it’s the part I most enjoy — but I’ve only got the one work site to my name. Granted, there have been various iterations of that site through the years, and it’s huge, but it’s not exactly showing a range of what I can do. The iterations might need to go in, along with the other promotional and graphic work I’ve done for it.

I’m finding the same issue with the magazine, annual report, and other print pieces I work on — we have designers who put those together, but I’m very much art-directing them. I’m choosing covers, I’m advising on layout, I’m finding the photographs, but I can’t actually say I designed them, and I’m not sure how to present that part of my work in a portfolio. Again, maybe I need to include shots of the pieces along with what, exactly, I was responsible for.

I can certainly include “metrocake,” and the various iterations on that, but that shouldn’t be the main focus of my portfolio. Any thoughts would be very much welcome, as I’m having a hard time with this…most designers out there have many clients in their portfolio, while I have just the one. Granted, it’s been a long association, but still!

  1. Hi Roe,
I’m Colleen, Thanks for your comment on Stephanie’s blog. Nothing like being in a rock-band to give a cleft palate a ginormous middle finger! :) Good for you. I’ll be back, thanks for your words. It’s people like you, (and your sisters) that MY kids NEED to see!! (Oh, I also have an older son who was born w/ an IUCL only… he escaped the cleft palate part. Sheesh, always something, heh??
